This friendly, hands-on workshop is Part 1 of our Introduction to Machine Sewing classes. We'll start right from the beginning and get you familiar with the machine and how it works. It suits complete newcomers as well as anyone who'd like a confidence boost before going further.

In this 3-hour class, you'll put what you've learnt into practice by making a tote bag in Ray Stitch fabric to take home. It's a satisfying first project that covers the essential techniques you'll use again and again.

Book this class together with Part 2: Essential Garment Skills, and you'll pay £160 for both instead of £170. Part 2 introduces the building blocks of garment making, so you can keep your momentum going once you've finished your tote bag.

Both classes need to be in the same order, and the discount is applied automatically at checkout. It can't be applied to classes booked separately.

Booking a class entitles you to 10% off all full price products in the shop (excluding books) from one week before your class starts through to the end of your course.

Getting to know the sewing machine - threading, bobbin winding, adjusting tension
Sewing straight lines, corners, and curves
Using seam allowances
Reading and using a simple paper pattern
Pinning, cutting, pressing, and finishing seams with a zigzag stitch

All tools and materials are provided.

Our classes are non refundable. Due our small class sizes it is very difficult to transfer your booking to a different date. If you cannot attend a class and are able to notify us at least two weeks before the class starts, it may be possible to change the date* but this is not guaranteed so please give us as much notice as possible to increase your chances. *Limited to one change only.

If you're running late, please contact us as soon as possible by email. Unfortunately, if you arrive more than 30 minutes after the class starts, we may not be able to admit you as this can disrupt the learning experience for other students.

In the event that we need to cancel a class, we will provide as much notice as possible and offer either a full refund or an alternative booking date.

At Ray Stitch, we'd love to welcome stitchers of all ages, but to ensure the best learning experience for everyone, we're unable to accommodate anyone under 12 in our workshops.

Young people aged 12-16 are very welcome in our classes but must be accompanied by a responsible adult (18+) throughout the entire session. The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own space in the class and participate alongside the young person. Students aged 17 and over can attend classes independently.
